Enjoying the summer in your RV means spending tons of time outdoors, and being outside in the elements all day can pose some serious health risks. But before you coop your family up inside your home or RV for the summer, simply prepare all of your fellow campers with these summer safety tips, and you’ll be able to enjoy your time outside without compromising your health.
Prevent Heat Stroke
While heatstroke can be extremely dangerous, it’s also entirely predictable and preventable. If you’re going to be outside during hot weather conditions, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, drink plenty of fluids and limit the amount of strenuous activity you do during the hottest parts of the day. Of course, never leave children, pets or other adults in a parked car for any amount of time.
Be Careful with Bugs
Spending time outside in the summer means you’ll probably be dealing with mosquitos, ticks and other pesky disease-carrying bugs. Always use insect repellents that contain deet to protect yourself and your kids from Lyme Disease, the West Nile Virus and other illnesses. Refrain from using perfumes, scented soaps or hairsprays and dress in neutral tones as opposed to bright colors or floral prints, which tend to attract more insects.
Keep Sunburns at Bay
Whether you’re headed to the mountains, the beach or the woods this summer, you’ll probably be spending plenty of time out in the sun. Whenever possible, avoid the sun during the hottest times of the day (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) by staying indoors or using a sun shade. When you are spending time in the sun, protect yourself and your kids with UV-protective sunglasses, clothing made from sun-protective fabrics and plenty of sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) on areas that are not already protected.
