A fantastic place to explore when you have the time is Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial located on South Bass Island in Ohio. There is so much to learn about at this beautiful spot including the rich heritage that lived here many years before. This historic place was established in order to honor all of those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, which took place near this island during the war of 1812. The memorial here was erected to celebrate the long-lasting peace the United States has with both Britain and Canada.
It is recommended that you start your journey at the visitor’s center. The Perry’s Victory Visitors Center offers guests a variety of artifacts and exhibits from the Battle of Lake Erie. If desired, you can watch a short 15 minute film on the history of the battle. The visitor’s center is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
One of the most eye-grabbing features to visit on the island is the International Peace Memorial. The monument itself is made completely out of granite, stands 352 feet tall and is almost 50 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. This fascinating piece of work was made possible due to donations from the Federal Government and of nine states including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and Kentucky. Carved within the walls of the memorial are the names of the Americans who were either killed or wounded in the battle. After a short climb of 37 steps, visitors can take an elevator to the open air observation deck, which is 317 feet above Lake Erie. This is a great place for pictures so remember to bring your camera. The observation deck offers spectacular panoramic views of the Lake Erie Islands and surrounding states. You can also view black powder firing demonstrations during the weekend from 11am until 4pm.
Camping is not allowed near the memorial but located just 14 miles away is the East Harbor State Park in Lakeside Marblehead. There is an abundance of amenities and activities to do during your stay such as fishing, boating, picnicking and more. Pull-thru sites are offered with full hook-ups for your Lancaster RV and are on a first come, first served basis.
Be sure to visit Specialty RV for a tune up before you head out.
