Specialty RV Salutes the Ohio State University Marching Band
If you thought the Ohio State University football team was incredible, you should see their marching band. Also known as, “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” they may be one of the first college marching bands whose fame surpasses the team they support.
Michael Jackson Tribute
About a month ago, they astounded everyone in the crowd (and nearly 9 million YouTube viewers) with their Michael Jackson tribute, which involved a mind-blowing animated formation of Michael Jackson moonwalking.
Homage to Hollywood Blockbusters
Viewers probably thought the Michael Jackson show was the highlight of the season, but only a week later, the band performed an arguably more astounding show. The marching band performed an “Homage to Hollywood Blockbusters,” halftime show, which received over 13 million YouTube views. From Superman flying out of a phone booth to a pirate ship battle in which an Ohio State ship sank a University of Michigan boat, the formations and music were unprecedented.
Getting in the Band
How do they do it? Tryouts for the Ohio State Marching Band aren’t easy. At the end of the summer, over 400 students fight for one of 225 available spots in the entirely brass and percussion band. Anyone who wants to be in the marching band must try out every year – even if they held a spot the previous year. With such stiff competition and grueling tryouts, it’s no wonder the Ohio State Marching Band once received the Sudler Trophy – an award given to the most outstanding college band in the nation.
What’s Next?
Ohio State University is the birthplace of many marching band firsts from animated formations to script writing and measured-step marching. Each show seems to be better than the last (even when fans thought that was impossible), so we can only imagine what is yet to come in the rest of the season and next year too.
At Specialty RV Sales in Lancaster, we’re proud to be fans of such a trend-setting university. From the students to the football team and of course – the marching band, we’d like to salute Ohio State University for its incredible accomplishments.
